COMOX, B.C. – The Town of Comox is dedicating $6,000 towards a new electric vehicle charging station.
During the April 17 committee of the whole meeting, Comox council members approved a recommendation from CAO Richard Kanagin that the town participate in the Mid-Island EV Network project and associated CleanBC Communities Fund application, with the Regional District of Nanaimo (RON) as the lead applicant.
The recommendation also asked for the town to dedicate $6,000 from general revenue, which will represent the town’s portion of the cost of one dual port public electric vehicle charging station, at a town-owned site within the community, and that the location of the dual port charging station be referred to staff.
“Although the location is yet to be determined, it would be reasonable to consider the installation of one dual port charging station for the downtown area of Comox,” Kanigan said, in a report to council.
Councillor Ken Grant mentioned that the question has come up, whether or not electric car owners should have to pay to charge their vehicles.
“I don’t think we need to discuss that tonight but it’s something we should decide whether that’s what we want to do when these come in, or not,” Grant said.
Mayor Russ Arnott pointed out that there is an electric car charging station behind town hall and it is free to use.
Arnott told the MyComoxValleyNow.com newsroom today that the town will determine the location for the station at a later date.
“We’re kind of thinking the mall area, whether it’s on the mall property or on the street or something like that, depending on how we deal with it.”
