CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – Rachel Blaney says the chinook fishing restrictions are a major concern for residents and stakeholders.
The North Island-Powell River MP says people want to see salmon stocks restored, but they want to see a comprehensive plan to get that done.
“They want to see supports happening and restoration happening to make sure we protect all wild salmon,” Blaney said.
“We have asked the minister (of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard) to listen to that and recognize that restoration is important and that small hatcheries really make a difference.”
Blaney added she asked the minister to visit the North Island to see the impact of the new regulations. She said many in the area feel the new regulations were announced out of nowhere without actual backing.
She also says there isn’t an overall plan that addresses the health of the wild salmon stocks, the land, and the impacts on the ocean.
“There’s a definite message, that the consultation, the support, the ability to have meaningful conversations for our region was not there. And we’re hoping the minister comes and hears those serious concerns in our riding.”
Blaney and her office are waiting to hear back from the ministry.
“I hope he will be taking action and definitely listening to the people in our riding.”
