Hold and secure lifted in Courtenay schools after police incident

COURTENAY, B.C. – A police incident in west Courtenay this morning put the Comox Valley School District on alert.

At roughly 8:20 a.m., the district was told by the Comox Valley RCMP RCMP that an incident was underway in West Courtenay.

“To keep our schools, our students, and our staff safe, we were advised to implement… a hold and secure in west Courtenay schools,” Comox Valley Schools spokeperson Mary Lee said.

Courtenay Elementary, Nala’atsi School, Puntledge Park Elementary, Arden Elementary, Lake Trail Middle School, and the School Board office were affected.

The hold and secure was lifted at about 9:00 a.m.

Lee explained that a hold and secure is different from a lockdown.

“Operations are normal within the building, classroom instruction carries on, but the exterior doors to the school, to the facility are locked,” she said. “So students are in classrooms but we just have the doors on the outside locked, and it’s less invasive, less panicky than what’s called a lockdown.”

Lee said the district does not know the details of the incident.
