Courtenay police respond to reports of morning gunfire

COURTENAY, B.C – Police are investigating a possible shooting this morning in Courtenay.

RCMP Constable Monika Terragni says the incident happened near the 1100 block of 10th Street just before 8:00 a.m.

She confirms there is a police presence at the scene. It seems to be focused on the area around Piercy Avenue and 10th Street.

“We went to the area immediately, we had front line officers out there, police dog services, our major crime unit, and we’ve got our forensic identification section out there right now.”

She added that currently there is no evidence to suggest there was a victim, but asks if the public has any information to contact them immediately.

The shooting also prompted a quick ‘hold and secure’ for schools in the area including Courtenay Elementary, Nala’atsi School, Puntledge Park Elementary, Arden Elementary, Lake Trail Middle School, and the school board office.

This is the second report of gunshots in the area in two days.

Early Sunday morning RCMP noticed bullet holes in buildings near the Coffee Luv Bug Shop on Cumberland Road.

At this time, there is no word on whether the two incidents are connected, and investigators do not believe this was a random incident.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
