COMOX VALLEY, B.C. – People in the Comox Valley are literally taking steps to help fight cancer.
They’re doing that at tomorrow night’s Relay For Life Fundraiser hosted by the Canadian Cancer Society.
As of Friday afternoon, the Comox Valley event had raised $53,000, far surpassing its goal of $35,000.
Funds go towards cancer research and support services for people living with cancer and their families.
This will be the third relay for Greg Chadwick, who is promoting the fundraiser that’s taking place at the Comox Valley Sports Centre track from 4:00pm to midnight.
“I’ve had a few connections to cancer to help people find hope, find help in any way that I can do it,” Chadwick said.
The relay begins with a Survivor’s Lap. Chadwick said sharing the track with all the people who have gone through the fight is a moving experience.
“There are smiling faces and tears, but there’s optimism in there as well,” he said. “It’s a beautiful thing.”
The format has changed from an overnight event to one that ends at midnight.
Among the highlights are luminaries lining the track, head shaves, live music, and a watermelon-eating competition.
“(There are) going to be some amazing things,” he said.
