COMOX, B.C- Comox Valley Airport has seen a consistent increase in usage.
The airport had 426,203 passengers passing through YQQ between March of 2018, and March 2019.
Comox Valley Airport CEO Fred Bigelow says the increase is likely because of the help from WestJet and AirCanada.
“We’re pretty confident the rise in passengers could be attributed to the increase in capacity in both WestJet and Canada. Both of those airlines threw capacity at us on the Vancouver and Calgary routes in particular.”
He added that the demand for more direct flights to destinations across the U.S is noted, but because Comox is a non-hub airport, the focus will be on connecting flights.
“As a non-hub airport our biggest job is to provide the best connections we can for our passengers. Anyway we can see improvements to those connections will help our passengers here, and that is where our focus of our efforts will be.”
Bigelow is happy to see the numbers continue to increase every year and says the revenue will help fund future expansion.
“Seeing these numbers rise is helping us as we approach terminal capacity, and makes us get back to work and what we’re going to do to deal with that. What those higher passenger numbers equal is more revenue that we’re putting aside so we can afford to fund the terminal expansion when it comes.”
