Sayward and Black Creek win new playgrounds

SAYWARD, B.C – Black Creek and Sayward are in the top spots for the BCAA Play Spaces competition.

School Board trustee Shannon Briggs says a bunch of supporters stayed up to see where the communities would sit as voting closed.

“We’re pretty sure we’re (Sayward) in first, there was a group of us that held out for the final hour to get votes in for the final hurrah.”

The top three finalists receive $100,000 dedicated to upgrading their playground.

The runner ups will receive prizes of $30,000 (fourth place), $20,000 (fifth place), and $10,000 (sixth place).

Briggs says the upgrade is much needed for Sayward.

“For our community it’s huge, we don’t have many playspaces here, our population is only 1000 people. The current playground was my grade three playground when it was brand new, so it’s almost 27 years old.”

She added that it’s good to see Black Creek in the top three as well.

“Black Creek did amazing, they did a great job and were really happy we could be right alongside them at the top, and get our playgrounds because they are very much needed in both communities.”

The final results will be released on July 2nd, and can be found here.
