DENMAN ISLAND, B.C – Island Coastal Economic Trust has invested $10,000 to help improve internet access on Hornby and Denman Islands.
The Denman Island Internet Committee will be working with ICET on the project to help make the community’s hopes a reality.
Spokesperson for the Hornby Island Community Economic Enhancement Corporation, Karen Ross, says better internet is something they need.
“On the islands for the internet, we still have old copper wiring, and there are literally properties on the islands that can not receive internet,” said Ross.
“Its a struggle for many people on both islands, and of course the further we get into the digital age the more that becomes an issue for us.”
The project will engage with residents, businesses, local governments and associations in a consultation process to decide what the community needs and wants.
The feedback will be translated into an implementation plan, which will help outline how internet will be introduced into the two communities.
Mayor of Tofino and ICET Chair Josie Osborne says quality internet is something people need in live their daily lives.
“This is something that we know: not all Canadians are connected to high-speed internet, and it’s so important for people in their daily lives, from education and health opportunities, but also business and being able to live high-quality lives.”
The project is expected to get underway in the fall with completion anticipated within a year.
