Search efforts underway for missing Cumberland man

STRATHCONA PROVINCIAL PARK, B.C – A man from Cumberland was reported missing on Friday, and search efforts are now underway.

Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue are looking for 50-year-old Murray Naswell.

Naswell was hiking to the summit of Mount Albert Edward in Strathcona Park Wednesday but did not return to his campsite that night.

CVGSR President Paul Berry says search teams are now looking for him, but the weather is making that difficult.

“At this point weather is hampering our efforts to get into the search area by helicopter, we were able to get some air search last night in the Albert area.”

“Today (Sunday) we are attempting to insert dog teams and ground teams, but again the weather is preventing that.”

Berry adds that the search will become a much larger operation later this afternoon.

“We have planned for tonight for teams to come from all over the island as well as the lower mainland… a very large search starting later this afternoon and into tomorrow.”

He also adds search and rescue believe a couple was hiking with Naswell and is hoping they could come forward to help find him.

“We would really like to meet with them and talk with them, so we can determine a little bit more of Murray’s state of mind, clothing and behaviour.”

If you have any information on Murray Naswell’s whereabouts, you’re asked to call the Comox Valley RCMP at 250 338-1321, or Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue at 250 334-3211.
