RCMP warns residents about BC Hydro scam

COMOX VALLEY, B.C – Comox Valley RCMP are warning you about possible scammers claiming to be BC Hydro.

It confirms that it received reports from residents that someone was calling them claiming to be from BC Hydro, and demanding payment.

The scammers would threaten to disconnect services if a request for payment is not received.

To avoid disconnecting services, the scammers ask for payment via pre-paid cash or credit cards, or deposit money into a bitcoin ATM.

BC Hydro wants to remind customers that it does not collect credit card or bank account information over the phone, by email or text.

It also does not accept payment from pre-paid cash or credit cards, or bitcoin.

BC Hydro says it will send several notices by mail and use an auto dialer to remind customers to make a payment..

If you receive a call from someone claiming to be BC Hydro and they ask for a payment, hang up and call 1 800 BCHYDRO, or call Comox Valley RCMP at (250) 338-1321.
