Comox Valley, Cumberland competing in environmental challenge

The Comox Valley Regional District and Cumberland are taking part in the Municipal Survivor Climate Challenge.

The goal of the challenge is to initiate a fun and friendly local government competition with each participating community on Vancouver Island measuring their average “One-Planet Living” footprint.

Council and Board members will then take steps in their daily lives over the next year to reduce their average footprint.

Both the CVRD and The Village of Cumberland are participating in the challenge, which started back in April.

The criteria for the challenge is based on how many Earth’s would be required if everyone lived like that community, their ecological footprint (how many hectares of land are required), and how large is the carbon footprint (tonnes of CO2) of that community is.

The Comox Valley currently sits 2nd overall for the amount of Earth’s and is tied for 3rd on the overall ecological footprint.

The challenge will run until April of 2020, with each community hoping to decrease its impact as much as possible throughout the year.
