In the latest update of the water treatment plan project, a design and build contract has been signed.
AECON Water Infrastructure Inc. has been given the contract and construction is set to begin this fall, with the new system expected to be completed by 2021.
The CVRD says once the new water system is built “it will meet health standards, eliminate turbidity related boil water notices and deliver safe, high-quality drinking water to Comox Valley residents for decades to come.”
Chair of the Comox Valley Water Committee, David Frisch, says it’s good to see the contract finally awarded.
“The awarding of this contract is a major milestone to delivering on our commitment of a new water treatment system that the community needs and deserves.”
“So much work has been put into the planning stage of this project and it’s exciting to start building it,” he added.
The CVRD says AECON Water Infrastructure Inc’s proposal was chosen because it included an innovative design, it met industry best practice standards and came in at the lowest price.
Designs for the project will be shared with the community at an open house to be scheduled this fall.
The project’s budget has also been updated to $126 million from the original 2017 estimate of $110 million to account for increased labour and material costs.
Only those connected to the Comox Valley Water System will have to pay for the new system.
Despite the increased budget for the project, residents will still only pay an average cost of $86 per household per year, which is unchanged from previous estimates.
