Fund boosts Comox Valley Community Foundation

The Comox Valley Community Foundation now has more money to give to local organizations.

And the foundation has the Robert & Florence Filberg Fund to thank.

An additional $140,000 will be available to the CVCF to grant to local charitable organizations in 2020.

These funds, which augment the already announced $500,000 in grants and scholarships for 2020, were made available through the fund.

“This is incredibly exciting news for our community. This funding will augment our existing grants and allow us to fund even more applications to meet the needs of our community,” said CVCF president Matt Beckett.

“Last year we funded less than 50 percent of the requests received – these funds will close that gap considerably.”

The $140,000 will be administered through the CVCF’s Community Enrichment Grant process for 2020.

It will be specifically directed to children and families ($99,707.75) and religious organizations and churches undertaking work in support of identified community needs and priorities ($39,883.09).

Prior to his death Robert J. Filberg established The Robert & Florence Filberg Fund with the Vancouver Foundation.

Upon his death, the Vancouver Foundation became the principal beneficiary under the Will.

The funds from the disposition of land and timber were permanently endowed and the income earned has been used annually since 1977 to improve life in the Comox Valley, with a focus on children and youth, education, religion, culture and civic improvement.

Applications for 2020 Community Enrichment Grants opened August 1 and close September 27.

A final workshop to assist organizations in preparing their applications will be held Monday, August 19 from 3:30-4:30pm at the Courtenay Museum.

Complete details including criteria, eligibility requirements and the application link are available on the CVCF website.

Founded in 1996, the CVCFis a public charitable foundation registered with Canada Revenue Agency.

It works with local families, businesses and organizations to create endowment funds that support the valley and its residents through grants and scholarships.

Over the past 23 years, the CVCF has awarded more than $2.5 million to 159 local non-profits and 180 students.
