The Sovereign’s Volunteer Medal was given to 44 people in British Columbia last week, and one of them was here in the valley.
The Sovereign’s Medal is given to volunteers that showcase exceptional volunteer achievements in a wide range of areas.
The Comox Valley recipient was retired Colonel Terence (Terry) Chester.
He has been a volunteer within the Comox community for 10 years, notably with the Comox Valley Air Force Museum Association. He has taken on several roles to help promote volunteerism within the valley community, with a focus on commemorating the contributions of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Both the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia and Canada announced Chester as the Comox awardee last Thursday in Victoria.
Any person who is a Canadian citizen and who has made significant, sustained and unpaid contributions to their community in Canada or abroad is eligible for the medal.
The medal is awarded to individuals only, not to groups or couples.
