Comox Valley Seniors Village hires temporary administrator

The Island Health Board of Directors has temporarily appointed an administrator to manage and oversee operations at the Comox Valley Seniors Village.

Susan Abermann will take on the role for a period of six months.

Abermann has a 25-year career in seniors care in B.C including serving as Island Health’s lead for residential care services.

She was also the executive director of another facility owned by the operator of Comox Valley Seniors Village

Island Health Board Chair Leah Hollins says it appointed Abermann to make sure things run smoothly at the facility.

“Providing high quality, safe, dignified care for seniors in our publicly funded long-term care facilities is a key Island Health priority, (and) due to the operator’s inability to meet the care expectations outlined in legislation, the Board of Directors has taken the extraordinary action to appoint an Administrator to manage the facility.”

The decision was based on a recommendation from the North Island Medical Health Officer.

The Medical Health Officer’s decision was informed by evidence from Island Health’s Community Care Facilities Licensing program after it conducted a detailed investigation that took place in August and September.

The interim administrator will report to the Island Health Board of Directors and will provide on-site responsibility for the daily operation and management of the facility.

The Comox Valley Seniors Village is a privately owned 136-bed long-term care facility. Island Health publicly funds 120 of the beds.
