MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard says the province “remains strong” after Green Party Leader steps down

Courtenay-Comox MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard thinks the NDP and the Green’s will continue to work together despite Green Party leader Andrew Weaver stepping down.

Weaver made the announcement this morning, saying on his website:

“It is after a great deal of thought and reflection that I am announcing today that I will not be seeking another term as the MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head. I am making this announcement now so that the party has enough time to start the process of electing a new leader in preparation for the next provincial election.”

The announcement does not change the balance of power in the province just yet though.

MLA Ronna-Rae Leonard says because the Confidence and Supply Agreement is between the two caucuses and not two people, she believes both the NDP and Greens will continue to work together.

“I think that we can feel rest assured that the stability of the government remains strong. We look forward to working with those B.C Greens to make life better for British Columbians. It’s a goal that we both share,” said Leonard.

Currently, in the legislature the NDP holds 41 seats, the Greens have three and the Liberals have 42.
