It’s B.C. Fire Prevention Week and Comox Fire Rescue is delivering the message out to the community.
This year’s campaign is, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!”
It’s to educate you about the small but important actions you can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.
Assistant fire chief Rick Shelton said it’s important to get as much knowledge on fire safety as you can.
“Everything from smoke alarms, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, finding a plan to have a way out of your house and a meeting place afterwards, all that type of stuff amounts to a much safer home for the families,” Shelton said.
Shelton noted that homes having non-operable smoke alarms is a fairly common problem.
He added that the best way to make sure your smoke alarms work is to test them and change theirs batteries a couple of times a year.
“Most hard-wired detectors are powered by your house’s electricity, also have a battery back-up in them, so you should check those bi-annually also and just pull them down and replace that battery in case the power goes out,” Shelton said.
In case of fire, Shelton said the most important thing you can do is make sure everyone is out of the home and immediately call 911.
Comox Fire Rescue will be holding a Fire Prevention Week Open House on Saturday.
It runs from 10:00am to 4:00 pm at the hall at 1870 Noel Avenue.
Shelton said everyone’s welcome.
“They can come by the station and have a walk-through and kind of see how operations work here, and get a little bit of fire prevention information and have a coffee and discuss with the fire staff, here.”
