A section of Vermont Place in south Campbell River is behind police tape this morning.

This, after a man was found dead outside a home at the end of the cul-de-sac in the usually quiet Ocean Grove neighbourhood.

Campbell River RCMP responded to a report of shots fired on the street at approximately 2:30am.

Police say the investigation is in its very early stages and multiple police resources are being utilized including Forensics Units, Police Dog Services, and the Campbell River Major Crimes Unit.

Further information will be released by the Campbell River RCMP as it becomes available.

“We are asking that the general public refrains from travelling in the general area to allow police the space they need to conduct their investigation,” said Cst Maury Tyre.

“This is a very serious investigation, and we are asking that if anyone has any information regarding the incident that they contact the RCMP directly.”

One neighbour, who wanted to stay anonymous, said he was awoken by noises around 2:30 this morning.

“We heard a rhythmic ‘bang bang bang bang bang.’ It lasted maybe 10 seconds or so. It was loud enough to wake us up but not really loud. It sounded like it was coming from pretty close to the house.”

The neighbour said he and his family wasn’t sure exactly what the sound was.

“It sounded weird. It crosses your mind that it was something not very nice but we thought it was something falling off the house. It was that loud.”

He added that he didn’t hear anything after that.
