BC Hydro provides scholarships to NIC students

BC Hydro is helping NIC students get one step closer to their dream job by providing them with scholarships.

This fall, seven $1,000 scholarships were given to trades students in Campbell River and the Comox Valley.

BC Hydro spokesperson Stephen Watson says with all the infrastructure nearby, it’s a great opportunity to give NIC students the time to practice their trade.

“We’re very proud to provide these scholarships, and while there are no guarantees these students may eventually work on our projects, it broadly supports the community to have tradespeople for future work and projects. In the last few years, we have been working more closely with NIC and they have wonderful facilities and programs. It’s a good partnership,” said Watson.

The scholarships were provided to two students who are First Nation, three students needing financial assistance, and two students with high academics. They were given out in different areas including industrial automation, carpentry, and electrician apprenticeship.

Watson also says BC Hydro will be providing six scholarships every fall from 2020 through to 2023, which will increase the total NIC trades scholarship funding to $31,000.
