Attempts underway to move large barge near Campbell River

Residents of Campbell River and Quadra Island are still seeing a barge ship in their backyards today.

The ship was first seen Saturday night.

Michelle Imbeau with The Canadian Coast Guard said in an emailed statement that crews tried to tow the boat Sunday night but it suffered damages to its hull making movement impossible at that time.

She added that 6 people onboard the tugboat that was towing the barge are safe and there were no injuries.

Transport Canada said in an emailed statement today that it’s currently working to get the barge removed from the area.

“Attempts are currently being made to have the barge refloated and assessed. Once it is refloated, it will be towed to Middle Point, at a facility just north of the mill in Campbell River, BC, to effect repairs if required. The Campbell River Lifeboat Station will monitor the refloating operation.”
