Courtenay hosting open house for 5th Street Bridge upgrades

The City of Courtenay is hosting an open house next week for the proposed upgrades to the 5th Street Bridge.

It’s inviting you to review project plans, speak with project staff, and provide feedback about what’s important as the city plans to limit impacts to residents during construction.

The city says the final design of the bridge, as well as project sequencing, staging, and schedule, are being refined over the next few months.

The rehabilitation work will include a new bridge deck, repairing steel beams, new handrails, removing the lead paint and rust, recoating the steel structure, new road markings, and replacing the existing sidewalks with three-metre wide multi-use pathways.

The total budget is estimated at $8.3 million and Courtenay is continuing to seek additional grant funding opportunities to help offset the cost of the project.

The open house will take place at the Florence Filberg Centre next Thursday from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.

If you can’t make the open house, the same information will be available online and you can provide feedback through a survey on the city’s website until Friday, December 6th.
