Campbell River has long been touted as the ‘salmon capital of the world’ but this weekend, it’s also the bowling capital of Canada.
The best bowlers in the country are in the city for the National Tenpin Bowling Championships.
The event kicks off today and runs until Sunday (Nov 21-24).
CR Bowling and Billiards marketing manager, Russ Wagg, said the city was selected for a few reasons, the most important one being the quality of the facility.
“What the (organizing) committee does, is they look around for the best facilities that can host the event and Campbell River has always had a very strong bowling presence and the owner, Ian Fong, in the last number of years, has dramatically renovated the lanes so that they’re top-notch, some of the best in the country, so that’s why one of the reasons why it was selected.”
Wagg said Campbell River is quickly becoming a hotbed for high-level tenpin bowling.
“It’s a big coup because not only are we hosting the nationals, but we also hosted earlier in the year hosted the provincial championships. So it’s provincials and nationals in one year,” he said. “It speaks volumes for the City of Campbell River and the facility, that we can offer the bowling world in Canada… they can do it all in one location.”
The tournament will crown champions in several categories including men’s and women’s singles, mixed doubles and team events.
Wagg said the winners will go on to represent Canada in international competition.
