The city is looking to hear from you on the Greenwood Trunk Sanitary Sewer project.
The Greenwood trunk will redirect sewage to the CVRD’s new Comox Valley Sewer Service trunk on Anderton Road, and allow the city to decommission three smaller temporary lift stations.
The city says the two new lift stations along the Greenwood Trunk will be designed with improved technology, including the ability to monitor the system remotely, decreasing response times and improving efficiency.
Mayor Bob Wells says the project has been in the works for a long time.
“This projects been on the books for probably well over a decade…(It’s been)one of the staff’s biggest priorities since I got on the council in 2014. We’re really happy to see this moving forward.”
He added that the goal is to make sure the needed infrastructure is in place while saving the taxpayers money in the long run.
“Right now the Courtenay lift station is at capacity so what we’re trying to do is extend its life so that’s a less expense down the long run for our community but at the same time allowing for more development in the east Courtenay area which is where our some of our major expansion areas are,” says Wells.
The upgrades are expected to cost $4.1 million and around $1.5 million of that will come from reserve funds with the remainder funded by borrowing.
If 2,017 residents decide they would not want the project to move forward, council will have to take a second look and reconsider its options.
