Hold and secure lifted at G.P. Vanier after report of weapon

A hold and secure has been lifted at G.P. Vanier Secondary.

Comox Valley RCMP spokesperson, Const. Monika Terragni, said police responded to a report of a male with a weapon in the area.

As a result, the school district implemented its hold and secure protocol as a precautionary measure.

Hold and secure is used in response to security threats or criminal activity outside the school.

During a hold and secure, all entrance doors to the school are locked, with no one allowed in or out of the building.

No one, other than law enforcement, is given access until the hold and secure has been cleared.

Terragni said the RCMP was using “the utmost of caution.”

“That way it would prevent anybody from getting into the school,” she said.

The hold and secure was lifted at 2:05pm.

Terragni wasn’t able to say if the suspect was found, but added that the hold and secure would only be lifted “if we determine there is no longer going to be a threat to the school.”

“We went to the area, and I believe the officers went through the school, just to make sure,” she said.

“We didn’t believe that this male was inside the school, but the hold and secure prevents that from happening, and we’re double sure, that way.”

Terragni added that the incident “is not random in nature.”
