BC Hydro extending warning to stay away from Puntledge River

BC Hydro is asking residents to stay away from the Puntledge River until the end of the month.

It’s extending its original warning, which would have ended this Friday, to February 4th.

It says the conditions are still too dangerous and with the amount of rainfall, we could see some minor flooding along the Puntledge.

“With the forecasted significant snowmelt and rain combination, the high tides on Thursday and Friday, and when the Browns River and Tsolum River may peak, there may be a potential for some isolated flooding near the river during the early morning high tides depending on the timing of high tides and peak flows.”

BC Hydro says the current water reservoir level is at 133.35 metres, nearly two meters shy of
where water begins to free-spill over the dam’s spillway crest.

Over the next week, river flows could reach up to 200 cubic meters per second during low tide and down to 50 cubic meters per second at high tide.

BC Hydro says it will be closely monitoring the actual water flows that come into the Comox Lake Reservoir and another update on the water levels could come out Friday.
