Comox Valley Coldest Night of the Year walk happening this weekend

The annual coldest night of the year walk to raise money for the Comox Valley Transition Society and the Dawn to Dawn Action on Homelessness Society is coming up this weekend.

The fifth annual event is hoping to raise $100,000 for the two organizations.

Heather Ney, Executive Director of the Comox Valley Transition Society says the money goes a long way when supporting both non-profits.

“It’s significant. We couldn’t continue to do the work that we do- both Dawn to Dawn and ourselves. This supports our tenant support workers and subsidizes rent, provides food and other necessities for those we interact with who are hungry, homeless or hurting,” says Ney.

“This year we’ve been able to use some of the funds raised last year to help open and operate the warming center that recently opened up as a place for those who dont have a home find some shelter from the inclement weather.”

Ney also says that the Comox Valley usually does quite well both provincially and federally when it comes to raising money.

“We’re number three for total dollars raised in BC and right now number 19 in Canada out of the 141 communities. Last year we finished 13th in the country so we feel like we can do that again and show up some of those much larger communities.”

The annual walk gives participants the option of a two, five for 10 Kilometer route and so far 51 teams and over 300 walkers are signed up.

At the time of this publication, the Comox Valley has already raised just over $55,000 for both Comox Valley Transition Society and the Dawn to Dawn Action on Homelessness Society.
