Cumberland Mayor speaks out on proposed riding boundary changes

BC’s Electoral Boundaries Commission is recommending a major overhaul to provincial ridings on the Island and a pair of new ridings on the Lower Mainland.

The biggest changes will impact the fast growing Comox Valley riding and Alberni Pacific Rim, which is undergoing a shrinking population.

Commission Chair Tom Melnick says a booming Comox Valley will see the southern portion of the riding, including Royston and Cumberland, added to Alberni Pacific Rim.

Cumberland Mayor Leslie Baird has some major concerns on that…

Baird says her council will discuss the issue and may register their concerns by a May 25th deadline.

The Commision rejected adding Hornby and Denman Islands to Powell River Sunshine Coast.

The next steps include public hearings, and input from MLAs before a final report in September.
