Comox Valley RCMP reminding you to stay vigilant as kids head back to school

Now that classes have resumed for some students in the Comox Valley, the RCMP is making sure they get to school safely.

Comox Valley RCMP Media Relations Officer, Constable Monika Terragni says drivers need to keep an eye out for kids while heading to and from work.

“People really need to pay attention to what’s going on in their area where they’re driving, know where those school zones are and be prepared to slow down,” Terragni said.

“In addition to that, there are going to be kids walking to and from school using those sidewalks, maybe using their bikes, skateboards, rollerblades, etc. to get to and from school, so make sure that you’re looking around and you’re slowing down and giving yourself plenty of time to get where you’re going in the morning, especially around the time when kids are coming to and from school.”

She added that it’s especially important to take an extra look as you drive near/past crosswalks.

“They may not have been seeing as much use in the last little while, but we are going to have kids that are maybe not in the school zone but are walking to school and waiting to cross the road at that safe spot,” said Terragni.

“Just be aware, be looking around and know that you’re sharing the road with a lot of pedestrians, a lot of kids that are going to and from their school.”

According to the province, those caught speeding in a school zone could face a fine of $196 (31 – 50 km/h) and lose 3 demerit points.
