Police sounding alarm over lack of due care by drivers

When you hear sirens and see emergency lights flashing, pull over immediately.

That’s what has police in Campbell River sounding the alarm after they were called to a multi-car crash in Oyster River over the weekend.

According to Campbell River RCMP Const. Maury Tyre, officers trying to get to the scene believed they could have handed out at least 15 tickets to other drivers during their response.

Tyre said when officers are heading to a call with emergency lights and sirens activated it means that there is an immediate threat to human life that they’re trying to get to.

“The public’s responsibility is to stop and pull over to the side of the road when you notice lights and sirens,” he said.

“This means no matter which direction you are proceeding you must pull over and stop. Then at an accident scene, you must follow the traffic directions of the officers present or the traffic control personnel.”
