North Island MP defends Coast Guard

Reaction continues to pour in, on this week’s federal budget after federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver tabled his balanced budget in the House of Commons.

So we asked Vancouver Island North MP John Duncan, why some of those surplus funds couldn’t be earmarked to keep the Comox Coast Guard Marine Communications Centre open…with that facility slated for closure as communication services are centralized in Victoria.

On the response to oil spills, Duncan says legislation is on the books to force carriers to clean up any pollution they create, and he adds the Coast Guard is well prepared to enact various cleanup measures.

This despite sharp criticism on the Coast Guard response to that recent tanker oil spill in Vancouver’s English Bay.
