The Comox Valley RCMP is asking everyone to be aware of their surroundings after a report of a man watching two teenage girls in Comox.
On Feb. 7th, a 15-year old girl told police that she and a friend were walking along some trails close to Pritchard Road and Guthrie Road in Comox when they saw a young man pass by them.
They reported seeing the same man a short time later and he was making them feel uncomfortable by staring at them.
“This is the kind of report we should receive but often people post to social media and do not make the report because it is thought to be minor in nature,” said media relations officer, Const. Monika Terragni.
“These girls did exactly what we would like to see in any similar situation. They recognized this male was making them uncomfortable with his behaviour, they removed themselves from the situation and immediately told someone they trusted who ultimately ensured we were notified.”
The RCMP is offering these safety tips:
When you’re out alone
- Keep your head up, stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.
- Take note of the people, businesses and sources of assistance in the area.
- Avoid a person or a situation which does not feel safe.
When walking, jogging, biking alone
- Plan your route to avoid isolated areas
- Vary your route, don’t be predictable
- Walk near a curb and away from alleys and doorways
Don’t overburden yourself with heavy parcels or a bulky purse
- Use a money belt or pouch to conceal money and important documents.
- Don’t display cash in public.
- Always carry personal identification, medical and emergency contact information with you.
When playing games on your mobile device
- Don’t ride and play. That also applies to skateboards, roller blades, or anything else with wheels.
- Be aware of your surroundings. As you are concentrating on your game, someone may be watching. This makes you an easy target for a crime.
- Keep an eye on your device battery. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you have no way to call for help.
When travelling at night
- Wear reflective gear.
- If riding on transit, ask the driver whether you can be let off closer to your destination.
- When travelling alone in a car
- Lock all doors and keep windows up when driving. Most car-jackings take place when vehicles are stopped at intersections.
