Elk Falls Canyon to see increased water flows

If you’re planning a trip to Elk Falls next week, take note that a public safety advisory will be in effect.

BC Hydro is commencing five, two-day in duration, steelhead migration and spawning flows down Elk Falls Canyon.

This means the water releases from the John Hart Dam will increase from 4 cubic metres per second (m3/s) to 10 m3/s on March 2nd to 4th, and then every following Tuesday evening to Thursday evening until April 1st.

“This is to enable fish to access good habitat from the powerhouse tunnel outlet area up to the base of Elk Falls,” says spokesperson Stephen Watson.

With public safety top of mind, BC Hydro will increase the water discharges for each of the migration flows from the dam at night.

Watson is now sending out a reminder to keep away from the river between the John Hart Dam and Elk Falls when the advisory is in place.

“Temporary safety signage will be posted,” he adds.
