Man pulled from river bank in Courtenay

We’re learning more about a rescue near downtown Courtenay.

Around noon yesterday, emergency crews helped a man who had fallen down an embankment behind 610 Anderton Avenue.

According to Courtenay deputy fire chief, Kurt MacDonald, when firefighters got there, they found him sitting on rocks near the Puntledge River.

“Our crews used a combination of ropes and ladders and a basket stretcher to go down, do an assessment of the individual’s injuries, and bring him up the bank and then transfer him over to the BC Ambulance Service,” MacDonald said.

MacDonald said that while he did have discomfort to his left knee, he was “very lucky that he didn’t hit his head on the rocks, or get knocked out and end up in the water.”

He added that the man was very appreciative of the help.

“Himself and some of his friends that were in the area that came down to offer support were very polite, very happy with the service of the RCMP, passers-by, the ambulance service… for a bad scene there was a lot of positivity there for us.”

Comox Valley RCMP Const. Monika Terragni confirmed that police responded to a report of a man being pushed off the barrier of 6th Street, down the embankment, and into the river.

Witnesses told police that they saw a group of youths running from the area.

However, Terragni says it hasn’t been confirmed whether they were involved or potentially saw what happened.
