One person dead in Black Creek morning crash

One person has died following a single-vehicle crash along Highway 19A in Black Creek.

Oyster River Fire Chief Bruce Green says a driver struck a power pole in the 8400-block early this morning (Tuesday), succumbing to their injuries on scene.

A passerby reported the crash just before 3:00 am, and Green says he was first on scene. When he arrived, he found the power pole broken in half.

“A car was there and the hydro line was down,” Green tells My Campbell River Now. “Unfortunately, upon further assessment, I determined that the driver of the vehicle was deceased.”

Green says only one person was in the car.

The crash resulted in a slow go for drivers this morning. The 1.9-kilometer stretch of highway between Hamm Road and Lalum Road, roughly 14-kilometers south of Campbell River, was fully closed for hours.

“The road was closed for RCMP to do their scene assessment, and then BC Hydro had to replace the power pole,” Green adds.

However, just before 10:00 am, DriveBC said that the highway had fully reopened.
