Heat wave; cooling centres open, soccer games postponed

The Comox Valley is expected to see highs around 37 degrees Thursday and Friday. The high temperatures have led the Comox Valley Sports and Social club to postpone all of this Thursday’s soccer games to next week.

Comox and Courtenay have a number of cooling stations and other options for people who need to escape the heat:

Rotary Water Park at Lewis Park: Water park hours extended Wednesday August 11 through Sunday August 15, open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day. www.courtenay.ca/waterpark

Outdoor Pool and Wading Pool: The outdoor pool and wading pool at Lewis Park are great ways to cool down. For schedule information visit www.courtenay.ca/pool

For more information on Courtenay Recreation programs and facilities visit www.courtenay.ca/reconline or call  250-338-5371 or 250-338-1000

The Town of Comox is offering cooling options through to Saturday, August 14 to help beat the heat:

Comox Community Centre Indoor Cooling Areas (1855 Noel Ave.): Wednesday and Thursday 6 am – 9 pm, Friday 6 am – 6 pm, Saturday 8 am – 1:45 pm;

Comox Fire Hall Outdoor Cooling Mist Station (1870 Noel Ave.): Located in front of the Fire Hall, daily 11 am – 5 pm, as well as offering shade shelter and a dog bowl for four-legged friends;

Comox Rotary Splash Park, Marina Park (127 Port Augusta St.): Open daily 10 am – 8 pm.

People are encouraged to drink plenty of water, even before feeling thirsty and staying in cool places. Check on your loved ones and neighbours, especially seniors to make sure they are cool and drinking water. For more heat safety tips click here.
