Courtenay firefighters quickly extinguish rooftop fire at Courtenay Dairy Queen

You can still get your soft serve at Dairy Queen, thanks to the quick actions of Courtenay firefighters.

Shortly after 2:00am this morning, the Courtenay Fire Department received a report of a fire showing on the roof of the DQ on Cliffe Avenue.

Deputy fire chief Kurt MacDonald said when they got there, crews determined that the fire was coming out of a rooftop air conditioning unit.

He added that crews were able to access the area and quickly put the fire out.

MacDonald said the fire was contained to the rooftop unit with no damage to the rest of the building.

Staff were on site and were able to get the call through to 911. MacDonald said that gave fire crews ample opportunity to extinguish the fire.

He said the restaurant is back open today.

MacDonald noted that the cause would have been a part failure within the unit itself “and definitely was not suspicious, no evidence of any arson or untoward behaviour.”
