5th Street Bridge repainting takes next step

A milestone for the 5th Street Bridge project.

After crews removed the lead paint, both ends of the bridge have now been recoated in a new coating of marine paint.

The City of Courtenay says the bridge coating system is one of the most effective ways of protecting a steel bridge from corrosion.

It added that this signals a milestone in the progress towards rehabilitating the steel structure and protecting it from corrosion for many years to come.

On Saturday, the city says the fresh paint is apparent as the white plastic containment system is being removed from both ends of the bridge.

Crews have moved to the centre of the bridge to recoat the last remaining section.

The city says this work will take several weeks, and then the focus will shift to the final phase of work, which is bridge deck repairs.

This past spring, over 2,100 people provided input online, and the majority of the responses favoured keeping the bridge “classic green”.
