It’s an exciting time for Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North. Staff is about to begin two large construction projects that will ultimately see 32 local families secure a safe and affordable place to call home.
And it’s just adding to their growing list of already completed projects. To date, since 2004 Habitat VIN has teamed up with local communities to build 39 affordable homes across North Vancouver Island.
But according to staff, many people associate volunteering with build sites, but currently, they say their “most pressing need” is actually in another area of operations: their two ReStores.
With this in mind, the non-profit organization is putting out an urgent call for ReStore volunteers. They say the role is a good fit for those passionate about the environment while noting it’s also fun for the avid thrifter — after 40 hours of volunteering, volunteers are actually eligible for a 25 per cent discount.
Director of Retail Operations, Tom Beshr says there are a wide variety of roles to fill, “including sorting, cleaning, and creating displays of household items, as well as cashiers, and testers of electronics, tools, and small appliances.”
Beshr finds that many people don’t realize the important role the ReStores play in Habitat’s affordable housing program. “The ReStore is the social enterprise that funds Habitat’s operations and helps to ensure that financial resources are available to support our construction projects. He adds, “ReStore volunteers are just as vital to the building of homes as construction volunteers.”
Volunteer shifts are typically four hours long, available Monday through Saturday. No experience is necessary, with orientation and site safety training provided.

Meanwhile, both businesses and members of the public interested in donating housewares, home and garden items, art and decor, furniture, appliances, or building materials are welcome.
In the Comox Valley, donations can be dropped off at the ReStore on 13th St. And in Campbell River, the ReStore is located on Willow St. Both locations are open from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm, Monday through Saturday.
