Island Health working on new technology to treat dementia

Island Health is working with the University of Victoria ‘s CanAssist program and Centre on Aging to use technology to help people with dementia, and their caregivers.

Cheryl Beach is Island Health‘s Director of Community Care Initiatives. She says one of the symptoms people with dementia experience is “wandering”.

Beach says they’re working on using a tablet to play a recorded video message telling the person it’s nighttime, and asking them to go back to bed.

They’re calling it the Wandering Deterrent System. Beach says it’s still early in the project but they’re looking for clients to help test it.

About 40% of Island Health’s Home and Community Care clients have dementia.
