Affordable Seniors housing in short supply says Seniors Advocate

Small and rural communities are facing unique challenges when it comes to housing for seniors.

That from Seniors Advocate Isobel Mackenzie’s latest report, she says the ideal is to ensure seniors across BC have housing that is “affordable, appropriate and available”….but adds sadly we’re not meeting the goal.

Mackenzie says the deferral account proposal could really benefit rural areas, because it’s more likely seniors in those communities own instead of rent.

The accounts would help cover costs while on a fixed income; by using home equity.

But the government would have to fully embrace the program to make it work – and there is no guarantee that will happen.
