Duncan Avenue to be closed, long delays at 5th Street Bridge next week

A commute to work may look a little different next week with part of Duncan Avenue and the 5th Street Bridge closed for construction.

The City of Courtenay Public Works will be doing upgrades to its storm drain system next week starting on Monday on Duncan Avenue. They will be adding new catch basins to improve drainage in heavy rain.

Construction will be underway from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. for up to four days, according to the city.

Duncan Avenue will be closed between 4th and 5th streets and traffic control personnel will be directing vehicles around the side streets.

While Duncan Avenue is getting changed up, 5th Street Bridge will be getting its northbound lane paved as early as next Tuesday.

The city says drivers should expect 24-hour delays on the bridge until the pavement sets. Traffic will still be single lane alternating traffic and will switch when the southbound lane gets paved in a few weeks, according to the City of Courtenay.

Routes suggested by Courtenay to avoid congestion include the 17th Street Bridge, Condensory Bridge and the North Connector.
