Children of essential workers, particular needs able to return to school next week

School District 71 has announced in a letter to parents that services at schools will be available to children of essential workers and those with particular needs in January.

The announcement comes after the provincial government’s Wednesday announcement, delaying K – 12 classes from starting until Jan. 10.

SD71 says students with diverse learning needs and children of essential workers will be able to return on Jan. 4 for school hours. They say to contact your child’s school principal if they fall into these categories.

Strong start programs will not be available between Jan. 4 to 8, however, the district says most childcare providers at schools will be operating. They say to check with the provider at your school.

Staff will be returning on Jan. 4, according to SD71, and will be preparing safety protocols and for the continuation of learning.

Comox Valley Schools told Vista Radio that they will be planning for the possibility of some online learning along with the return to in-person and feel well prepared.

“Given our experience with delivering online education and the fact we have Navigate – which is one of the largest in this field, we are well-positioned to pivot if needed,” said Comox Valley Schools.

Busses will start running on Tuesday for essential workers students and those with particular needs. They say the busses will be prepared for students with particular needs.

A further schedule will be posted later, according to the school district.

SD71 is also reminding parents who travelled outside of Canada, a child can’t attend school until after 14 days of returning to the country.
