Comox Valley Regional District to open another warming centre amid cold conditions

Funding from Emergency Management BC will allow the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) to open another warming centre.

The centre will be located in the basement of the Salvation Army Church at 1580 Fitzgerald Ave. in Courtenay and will be open from Jan. 5 to 11 from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.

The CVRD says the centre will be staffed to keep the provincial health guidelines and is wheelchair accessible.

The district says warming centres have provided services to over 178 people over nine nights, 124 at the Harmston locations and 54 at the Salvation Army Cornerstone Location.

People of all ages have attended, many of whom are employed locally, and grew up in the valley but couldn’t find a permanent safe place to live.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning for the area, forecasting up to 25 cm of snow for the Comox Valley and surrounding areas Wednesday night.
