Former Canucks player Jake Virtanen charged with sexual assault

A former Canucks player has been charged with sexual assault.

In a press release, the Vancouver Canucks confirmed the charge to Jake Virtanen after an investigation by Vancouver Police.

The team says they have been in contact with VPD since the investigation began and actions have been taken with Virtanen.

“We have been made aware of the charges laid by the Crown against Jake Virtanen. When the allegations first came to our attention, we immediately placed Jake Virtanen on leave,” said the team in a press release. “He is no longer a member of the organization.”

Virtanen was placed on leave in May 2021 after allegations of sexual assault surfaced.

The team say they are committed to fostering a safe and welcoming environment.
