Aquatics strategy created as pools near the end of their lifespans

A community-wide aquatics strategy has been launched as some Comox Valley pools near the end of their lifespans.

The strategy is being done between the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and the City of Courtenay. Recent facility condition assessments for their facilities found the Comox Valley Sports Centre Pool and the District Memorial Outdoor Pool are nearing the end of their lifespans.

The city and CVRD say the aquatics strategy will help determine the pools’ futures over the next 25 years and are asking for feedback from residents. Aspects being discussed include current condition, satisfaction, accessibility and features.

Courtenay mayor Bob Wells says the step is very important in the planning process.

“Generations of Comox Valley residents and visitors have benefited from local aquatics facilities and programs,” said Wells. “We know how important these facilities are to so many. The feedback we receive will ensure we’re capturing the diverse voices of all parts of our community as we map out a way forward.”

The district says postcards are now in the mail to Comox Valley households. They have a link to an online survey. Each card has a unique login code. Respondents will have the option to fill out a prize draw for a one-year membership to the Comox Valley Sports and Aquatic Centre.

The survey closes on March 25.

The CVRD says low-cost recreation opportunities like swimming are important to community health and wellbeing. The feedback would help decide what changes need as more people come to the area.

“Swimming pools offer fitness, fun, and social connections, as well as important life-safety skills and competitive training. Some of our local facilities are aging, and our population is growing, and it’s time to evaluate where we go from here,” said Daniel Arbour, chair of the Comox Valley Recreation Commission.

“We’re asking the community to share input that will help guide decision-making about indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities and services for years to come.”

The survey and focused sessions will be used in the decision making. A strategy draft is expected for early summer.
