Let’s talk about prostate cancer

Prostate cancer kills a dozen men every day. That’s according to Garry Janz…he’s one of the founders of the Telus Ride for Dad event, which looks to fight and raise awareness about the disease.

He says prostate cancer is also a disease that not everyone likes to talk about.

Dr. Julian Lum is a friend of Garry’s and a scientist at the BC Cancer Agency in Victoria. He says local support and events like Ride for Dad have helped raise awareness on the disease.

Lum says if you catch prostate cancer early, it’s easy to defeat it. But he adds there’s still a long way to go, and a lot to learn about the disease.

Lum touches on the work of our own immune system.

He says right now scientists are learning how the immune system is changing and evolving as someone develops a cancer and as they go through treatment.

The Telus Ride for Dad rolls on Saturday. Registration is from 7 until 10:00 am and the ride kicks off at 10:30 am at Slegg Lumber in Cumberland. For more on the event, visit the Ride for Dad website.
