Courtenay’s Civic Square renamed to Randy Wiwchar Plaza

The former Civic Square next to the Sid Williams Theatre on the corner of 5th Street and Cliffe Avenue is now called Randy Wiwchar Plaza.

The area was officially renamed Saturday to pay tribute to Wiwchar, who was a long-time City of Courtenay employee, youth and cultural advocate, volunteer, sports coach and mentor.

“This is just an opportunity for the City of Courtenay to say thanks to Randy,” said Courtenay Mayor Bob Wells. “We want to make sure that we honour him in the best way possible.”

Wiwchar passed away at the age of 60 in 2016.

“He touched so many lives in a positive way and really just made the entire community a better place to be,” said Wells.

Wiwchar moved from Flin Flon, Manitoba to Courtenay in 1990 to become the administrator for the Courtenay Recreational Association.

Wiwchar was later named the City of Courtenay’s director of community services.

“The work that he did for decades for the city is going to reverberate for generations in the Comox Valley,” said Wells.
