Sports Centre pool to be closed for September due to leak

The Comox Valley Sports Centre’s pool will not be re-opening as soon as planned.

The Comox Valley Regional District says they discovered a leak in the pool and tried to repair it during its annual shutdown. However, the leak is bigger than they expected and they will have to isolate it.

The location of the leak has not been found, according to the district. They say the leak is not unexpected, however, because it was built in 1975.

This will delay the re-opening of the pool and they expect it to be closed for the month of September, according to the CVRD. They say this will disrupt some user groups and patrons.

“We were all disappointed to hear of the leak at the Sports Centre pool, which will, unfortunately, have an effect on some residents within the community,” said Recreation Services senior manager Jennifer Zbinden.

“These types of situations are never planned and are nearly impossible to predict, so we’re doing our best to ensure community groups and recreation use members are impacted as little as possible.”

Zbinden adds other facilities might be able to accommodate current user groups of the pool. She says the adaptive and aquatic rehab programs will be relocated at this point.

The district says they have been talking with pool users, adjusting the Aquatic Centre programming and finding alternatives to ensure all pool programming is accommodated.
