Drought like conditions prompt Nanaimo MP’s bill

With river levels running dangerously low because of the lack of rain, Nanaimo Cowichan MP Jean Crowder has introduced a bill to protect the Nanaimo and Koksilah rivers.

They aren’t covered by the Navigation Protection Act.

Crowder says she knows the bill won’t even get debated before the election… but she wants people to recognize the value of the rivers and send a message.

Crowder says the rivers are crucial habitat for salmon, and unless they’re in the Navigation Protection Act, projects that could put them at risk could bypass environmental assessments.
