Immigrant Welcome Centre event to shine a light on newcomer experiences

New and longtime residents of the Comox Valley and Campbell River are invited to participate in an event to shine a light on immigrant newcomer experiences.

The virtual event called Building Empathy: Immigrant Experiences is being held by the Immigrant Welcome Centre’s Welcoming Communities Coalition on Jan. 25.

They say participants will learn about the challenges newcomers have faced when they settle into their new communities on the island.

The centre says themes of social isolation, finding meaningful employment and addressing basic needs will be explored in small group discussions.

Coalition coordinator Julie Keumbehdjian says the themes come around frequently and an opportunity to talk about them is needed.

“We see recurring needs and challenges emerge time and again through our public forums, dialogues, and research,” said Keumbehdjian.

“This event is an opportunity for the public to listen to the lived experiences of immigrants first-hand and talk about how we can build empathy in our communities of newcomers.”

The event is free to attend and the registration link can be found here.
